i am sad

All these things are suddenly clicking with her.  She is coloring non-stop and (tear) she is coloring inside the lines.  For some reason I think of it as a loss of artistic freedom, it makes me sad, she is such a big kid.
That freedom and gesture that only wee ones have...is gone.  At least when she paints it is still free-form and gestural.  But yikes, with all the writing and the coloring.  I don't know how I'm going to handle Pre-K if this is what is happening the week before school starts.  Slow down, little one.  Slow down.

She colored this for me while I was at work the other night, and she did three more in the same sitting.  She is a coloring machine.  Guess what she's doing as I type this.

I need a mommy pep talk, because all these changes are making me want to cry.

  1. Exactly why you will not find a coloring book in my house. I want my child to think her art as she creates it, is perfect.

  2. I love coloring, so we have lots of coloring books. But you would never hear any of us say anything about staying in the lines EVER. I encourage coloring outside of the lines.

One good thing, she altered a picture. She did one of Minnie Mouse and she made the tips of her yellow shoes red. There is still lots of freedom within those pages.

  3. it's all good!!! it just means she's got wonderful fine motor skills - be a mom to a boy for a DAY and you will WISH for coloring inside the lines and general neatness and attention to detail:) they are so different, i love the differences but how hard it is to not be able to do a thing about them :) Danny still writes his name 10 stories tall and everything he colors is just an impatient scribble :|

  4. I feel the exact same way about my sweet baby James. He just turned 3 and I feel as if he is turning into a little boy faster than I could have ever imagined. It is a daily reminder for me to be present and stay fully connected to him when ever we are together. You know, how we can get so easily distracted in our beautiful, love filled, blogland! ;) xo Samantha
